Why Your Retro Life Needs a Retro Toaster
The retro lifestyle means a lot of things to a lot of people.
To some, living this lifestyle is just about fashion. They get in touch with that 1950s Betty and Veronica style. You know: bobby socks, saddle shoes, gathered skirts, and button-backwards cardigans.
Others go one step further and aim to bring back the golden age of makeup. Heavy layers, liquid foundations, pastel colors, and loose powder. And don’t forget what Audrey Hepburn said of lipstick: “I believe in pink!”
For those who go deeper, living retro isn’t just about style, but about lifestyle. These are the folks who seek to bring back the good old days in their homes: children playing outside, a strong woman of the house, quality family time, and more.
Then there are those who just love the look and feel of vintage things. They plaster their walls with Humphrey Bogart movie posters, stock the coffee table with back issues of the Sears catalog, and equip their children with such classics as the cup and ball, jax, and old fashioned metal wind-up toys.
And don’t forget appliances. Nothing transports your kitchen back to the Happy Days like a diner blue frigidaire or a cherry red espresso machine with classic 1950s curves.
And that brings me to the subject of this post: retro toasters
You see, nothing (and I mean nothing) makes your kitchen pop like a retro toaster. The only thing better than hot buttered toast in the morning is feeling like a regular June Cleaver as you prep it.
Let me tell you a bit about why your retro styled life is incomplete without a toaster in your kitchen.
Color! Color! Color!
Let’s face it. Today’s kitchen appliances are just plain drab.
Especially when it comes to toasters, you’ve usually got three basic choices for color: black, white, or steel.
Modern tastes are all about maintaining neutrality. Decisions about color are made to avoid anything that might offend the senses. As if walking into a kitchen was as precarious as dinner with the in-laws (you know the ones I’m talking about).
The 50’s, on the other hand, was the homemaker’s first escape from the plain Jane white that was the standard for appliances up to that point. This golden age of kitchenware rebelled against the previous decade with such favorites as canary yellow, pastel green, vibrant sky blue, canary yellow, and the iconic fire engine red.
Retro toasters breathe new life into your kitchen by transporting it some 70 years in the past. Even if your cabinets and counter-tops are modern, you can bring out that vintage feel by creating stark contrast with appliances that use bold color to announce their presence loud and clear.
Shape, Style, and Function
Vintage appliances are marked by rounded forms, space age features, and large Day-the-Earth-Stood-Still controls.
Nothing will make you feel more like Lucille Ball prepping breakfast for Little Ricky than pressing down the gigantic, robotic lever of the SMEG 2 Slice Retro Toaster. Adjusting the toasting level on these old school models makes you feel like you’re someone out of the Jetsons as you turn those stylishly bulky shiny metal knobs with big, bold numbers.
But they don’t just look classic. Many of these retro toasters are designed with the same level of quality as appliances of yore. Once upon a time, you only needed one (maybe two) washers in a lifetime. Nowadays, you’re lucky if you can squeeze ten years out of a top-of-the-line model.
Well, when it comes to retro toasters, there are plenty of brands that are built to last just like they were in the olden days. But don’t worry, as far as function is concerned, they’re designed with modern technology. This means that you are getting the style and durability of a vintage 1950s toaster with all the functionality that you would expect from a piece of 21st century technology.
An Easy Win for Your Retro Lifestyle
Whether you’ve just started your journey in “updating” your home decor for the vintage lifestyle or you’ve been living the life for years, a retro toaster is simply a very easy way to give your kitchen that Golden Age feel. While investing in a retro fridge, oven, or dishwasher might seem like a big leap for the sake of style, countertop appliances like toasters and mixers are baby steps towards building your retro home.
Without much time, effort, or expense, you can order your old-timey toaster, set it on your counter, and revel in the new attitude emanating from your kitchen.
So give a new toaster some thought.
Colorize your kitchen.
Style to your breakfast.
And lastly, capitalize on old-fashioned craftsmanship.

What Emma and I thought about this Malibu Blue 2 Slice Retro Toaster (Our favorite 2-slice toaster)
Alright, so rather than the modernized retro design, removable crumb tray, wide mouth toast slots and self-centering anti-jam technology… I wanna say that this toasters color is absolutely gorgeous, but you may have noticed that, so I wanted to give you all the features that makes this thing amazing right at first!
Anyways, this 2-slice retro toaster is one of Emma’s and I’s favorite. Honestly the feature that sets it apart from most is that it automatically centers your toast or bagels every time. Now, I’m not sure if you have ever had to deal with a toaster that did not do this but all I can say is that it is NOT fun.
What Emma and I thought about the Venice Sand 4 Slice Retro Toaster (our favorite stainless steel toaster)
I could go off and rewrite the exact same thing as I did for the Malibu Blue 2 Slice retro toaster, but I don’t really want you to re-read the same thing. So, let’s just quickly restate the main features and give a little more emphasis on this.
So, this Venice Sand 4 slice retro stainless steel toaster is like the big brother of the 2 slicer. It still has the removable crumb tray, wide mouth toast slots (4 rather than 2), self-centering anti-jam technology lift and lock feature and has the modernized retro design.
If you want to double your morning toast and/or bagel ability, then this one can definitely get you there!
What Emma and I thought about the Nostalgia 3-in-1 Breakfast Station (Our favorite retro toaster oven)
Would it be crazy to say that this breakfast station was and still is the most charming thing Emma and I have seen in person? It’s just way to cute for its own good!
This was our first retro related product that we had gotten together and because of that it holds a sweet spot in our hearts.
Now, enough of the mushy, gushy stuff and let’s actually tell you why this 3-in-1 breakfast station is so dang amazing!
Rather than the study construction, a non-stick removable griddle, the reusable coffee filter, multi-function toaster oven and removable crumb tray… It is compact and useful enough to use in the RV, on vacation, your son’s or daughter’s dorm room or anywhere else that you need your morning breakfast and coffee!
Before you go grabbing one of these (and we 110% recommend you do), there is really only one con to note with this oven, griddle and coffee maker combo breakfast station that we had to get used to. The cooking time and average temperatures do change a little bit depending on which or how many of the 3 cooking functions are being used at the same time… For example: If you are only using the top griddle only then your breakfast will cook a bit faster than if you were making coffee or toasting bread at the same time. We believe this is because the power usage is the same no matter how many cooking functions are in use… but don’t quote us on that.
Honestly rather than that, this has been the coolest, cutest and most useful retro styled cooking appliance for our kitchen!
What Emma and I thought about the cute Smeg 2 Slice Retro Toaster
Now, before you look at the $149 price tag and say “NOPE!”… Hold up just a second, yes, it is a bit pricey, but it is absolutely worth it because it is one of the best. Why?
My Emma really wanted this, so I ended up getting it for her. I personally thought “we could just buy 3 other retro toasters for that price” but like I said, I held my tongue and she got her new toaster.
Once it arrived the first aspect I noticed was how solid it felt. I mean you could actually tell the quality of the materials used and just the overall build that is made by SMEG had the word “premium” in mind.
By the way, this toaster has the removable crumb tray for some easy cleaning, which is always a plus. Lastly, it comes in multiple colors such as pink, black, sky blue, pastel green, cherry red and a few other retro colors as well.
What Emma and I thought about the Russell Hobbs Retro Styled Toaster (Our favorite retro styled toaster)
We thought this one was pretty dang cool, so we bought it. Not often do you see a toaster with a warming rank atop of it. This way you can keep your breakfast toast or bagel warm as you cook up some eggs and sausage or even just warm it up rather than toasting it as well.
It’s got just about every feature you’d need to make some great toast such as (but not limited to) the removable warming rack, a timer, the lift and lock mechanism, three different toasting functions and a variable browning control level!
Like the SMEG, this one is a little bit more on the pricey side, but at the same time… Keep in mind that all of the toasters we review are amazing! So, get the one that fits you, rather it’s the price, style, functions, doesn’t matter! We just want to help you enjoy your awesome retro lifestyle with us!
