Top Vintage Looking Toaster for Sale: What’s the Difference Between “Retro” and “Vintage”?
If you’re new to the retro lifestyle, or if you’ve been browsing around trying to decide how to get started, you may have come across the words “retro” and “vintage”. If you’re browsing this site, then you may have even noticed that sometimes people refer to retro toasters and other refer to vintage toasters.
If you’ve encountered the words often enough, you are probably getting a little bit confused. Sometimes they seem to mean the same thing, and sometimes they seem to mean something different. Well which is it? How is a retro toaster different from a vintage toaster? When someone says they’ve got a top vintage looking toaster for sale, what exactly do they mean?
I’ll answer these questions and more in today’s post.
A Look at Webster’s
Let’s start with some plain old dictionary definitions. If we look up “vintage” in Webster’s dictionary, the best matching definition for our purposes is “a period of origin or manufacture”. Retro, on the other hand, is defined as “relating to, reviving, or being the styles and especially the fashions of the past : fashionably nostalgic or old-fashioned”.
So, from those two definitions, we can gather that something that is vintage actually comes from times past. So, if I own a vintage 1950s dress, it’s a dress that was actually manufactured in the 50s. Retro goods, on the other hand, are simply made in the style of older fashions. So a retro 1950s dress may have actually been manufactured in 2018. It just looks old-timey.
What Is a Vintage Toaster?
Applying these definitions to the subject at hand, we can gather that a vintage toaster was actually produced decades ago. If you are looking to get as authentic as possible in harkening back to the Golden Age, hunting ebay for vintage toasters and other appliances is the way to go. However, remember that these appliances were produced in a different world compared to modern electrical technology. It would be best to consult a skilled electrician before actually using vintage electronics to make sure they are safe to activate (or even plug in!).
What Is a Retro Toaster?
Retro toasters are one created recently in the style of older models. Function-wise, it is electrically up to date with modern codes and requirements. However, the look, feel, color, and stylistic features match those of the 1950s era. If a website lists vintage looking toaster for sale, what they actually mean is a “retro” toaster.
